West Africa

Benin is a long, narrow country wedged between Nigeria and Togo on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in west Africa.  Benin is a relatively small country and is home to approximately 11.7 million people and the terrain is diverse.  More than one-third of the population in Benin is impoverished and many are starving within the nation.  With 63 people groups within this nation, there are currently 13 unreached people groups. Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa that covers an area of around 105,900 square miles and is surrounded by six countries. It is geographically located in the Sahel―the agricultural region between the Sahara Desert and the coastal rain forests.  There are eighty-one people groups in Burkina Faso, with twenty-seven of them being unreached people groups. Cape Verde is a cluster of 10 islands and various islets, 9 being inhabited and one uninhabited as it is an active volcano.  It is on the western side of Africa, 385 miles off the coast of Senegal.  Although the nation is predominantly a Christian nation, there is a deep need for Jesus vs. Religion. Côte d’Ivoire is located on the western African coast. Abidjan is the mecca center for most of Côte d’Ivoire. In the 1990s there was a great revival that gripped Côte d’Ivoire. But with the war that France had, the Christian President was ousted and replaced with a Muslim one. Since then, there has been an influx of Islam in Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa. Most villages and communities still have inadequate sanitation and water-supply facilities, which hinders efforts to improve public health. Guinea is located in western Africa along the Atlantic Coast. The poverty in Guinea is so crushing that the majority of its citizens have little or no reliable access to food, water, healthcare, education, or government services. In addition, more than 4/5 of the population is Muslim, predominantly Sunni. Less than one-tenth of Guineans are Christian. Guinea-Bissau is located on the Atlantic Coast on the western side of Africa. Guinea-Bissau was once hailed as a potential model for African development but is now one of the poorest countries in the world. Having been devastated by years of struggle for independence, violence, and guerrilla warfare, the nation continues to struggle with overwhelming foreign debt and an economy which relies heavily on foreign aid. Liberia is a heavily forested coastal nation along the Atlantic Ocean on the Western side of Africa.  Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world.  While Liberia only has about five unreached people groups among the 39 people groups within the nation, the work to do in Liberia is very large. Not only are we targeting the unreached people groups there, but we are working to circumvent the extreme issue of poverty among the people. The nation continues to be plagued with disease, entrenched fetishism and continual disruption of war, which has added hurdles for the Gospel to penetrate the hearts of the people. Mali is landlocked country located on the west side of Africa and is an incredibly volatile place for Christians right now.   Due to malnutrition and desertification, Mali has a high child mortality rate, with 10% of children not surviving to the age of five. Out of those who do survive, 1 in 3 will be malnourished. The religion in Mali is predominantly Islam, with an estimated 95% of the population being muslim and the remaining 5% adhere to traditional African religions. Mauritania is is located on the northwest coast of Africa.  It is entirely desert apart from the north bank of the Senegal River on its southern border and it is said that Mauritania is one of the least traveled places on the earth. Society is organized along strict ethnic lines, with a rigid system of castes and men dominate in all areas of life.   Many marriages are forced or arranged.  Polygamy is widespread as well as female circumcision.  Female slaves are sexually exploited. Forced feeding to fatten young girls for marriage is common among the Maurs and Haratin people.   Mauritania is a nation that is closed to the Gospel.  Out of 19 people groups, 15 of them are still unreached.  For over 1,000 years, Islam has been the predominant religion of Mauritania. The government limits freedom of religion in part by prohibiting the distribution of non-Islamic religious materials and the evangelization of Muslims. Niger is a landlocked nation located in western Africa.  The Sahara Desert covers most of the land, which makes the climate hot and dry.  Niger lies in one of the hottest regions of the world.   The rural population comprises of nomads and sedentary people.    There are over 10,000 villages throughout Niger yet there are practically no villages in the desert zone.  The largest people group in Niger is a landlocked nation located in western Africa.  The Sahara Desert covers most of the land, which makes the climate hot and dry.  Niger lies in one of the hottest regions of the world.   The rural population comprises of nomads and sedentary people.    There are over 10,000 villages throughout Niger yet there are practically no villages in the desert zone.  Out of 37 people groups in Niger, there are still 29 Unreached People Groups. Nigeria is located on the west coast of the Gulf of Guinea, and borders Benin, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger.  Nigeria is larger than the State of Texas and is Africa’s most populated country.   It is estimated that there are about 175 million people living in Nigeria, with over 500 people groups within Nigeria, which means that there are hundreds of languages spoken in this nation.  The Hausa people is the largest of the people groups within Nigeria.  Only about half of all Nigerian households have access to electricity, and even those who do often only have it for a few hours a day.   Nigeria's people struggle with inadequate supply of safe water and the high prices of many consumer goods.   Seven in ten Nigerians live off no more than $1.25 USD.   Poverty is a huge issue within this nation as well as crime and corruption.  This nation greatly needs Jesus. Sierra Leone is a small coastal nation that lies between Guinea and Liberia on the west side of Africa and is slightly smaller than the state of South Carolina. There are approximately 4.7 million people with over half of the population living in rural areas while about 40% are urbanized. Much of the population is children and youth. Sierra Leone is an extremely poor nation, with over half of its people earning only $1.25 per day. To make matters worse, the nation is politically unstable due to corruption and civil wars. Senegal is located on the westernmost point of Africa.  It borders the Atlantic Ocean and the northern part of the country borders the Senegal River. Senegal is known as the “Gateway to Africa.” More than one third of the population lives below the poverty line, and 75% of families suffer from chronic poverty.  Senegal is comprised of 92.1% Muslims and only 4.8% Christians. In Senegal, 80% of the population belong to three powerful Muslim groups. Muslim leaders have a significant influence over all aspects of Senegal life. The Gambia, a country in Western Africa, is situated on the Atlantic coast and is surrounded by the neighboring country of Senegal. It is a long narrow strip of land that surrounds the Gambia River. The Gambia is Africa’s smallest non-island country and is also one of Africa’s most densely populated countries. The population growth rate and infant mortality rate in Gambia are among the highest in Western Africa. Over the last several years, conflict in other western African countries has led to an influx of refugees into The Gambia, many of these refugees coming from Senegal, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The overall health conditions in The Gambia are poor due to inadequate sanitation and lack of access to safe drinking water. Togo is located in Western Africa and consists of six geographic regions and has a tropical climate. Togo is located on the Atlantic Coastline of Africa, wedged between Ghana and Benin and is among the smallest countries in Africa. The population of Togo is made up of 56 people groups, with currently seven unreached. About half of the population professes to be Christian, however many of Togo’s population still practices various ancestral forms of voodoo & believe in fetish type of beliefs.
