About Gabon

Gabon is located on the west coast of Africa between Equatorial Guinea to the north and Republic of the Congo to the south. Most of Gabon’s population is urban. The remainder of the population is scattered widely among several hundred rural villages, which are concentrated along the rivers and roads. Although agriculture occupies about one-third of the workforce, it plays a small part in the economy of the country...as a whole. Gabon is one of the world’s largest producers of manganese. In addition, revenues from petroleum have created a large revenue stream for the country. Despite Gabon being wealthy in resources, poverty is prevalent to many of the people, especially the women and children of Gabon. Due to a lack of education and social issues, including exploitation and trafficking of children, there is great oppression in this small nation. The population is relatively young: almost three-quarters are younger than age 30. Health facilities are inadequate. Hospitals are ill-equipped, and patients buy their own medications from pharmacies before treatment can begin. Malaria, tuberculosis, syphilis, AIDS, and other infectious diseases are widespread and virtually untreated. Many villagers also turn to the ngangas for remedies, as modern health care is expensive and distant. Spiritist beliefs and practices are widely observed and deeply pervasive in much of Catholicism, other Christian groups and Islam. This continues to cause many to fall back on fetishes, hallucinogenic drugs, ancestral spirits and dependence on the medicine men who have held them in bondage for generations. Secret societies are common; many government elite, police officers and members of the army often participate in bloody night time rituals including witchcraft and black magic. Christians who refuse to participate in these “harmless clubs” can be refused academic or professional advancement.

What's Happening in Gabon

The people in Gabon are engaged to see the Gospel prevail!  Nationals are dedicating their lives to missions.  The church in Gabon is not known for missions, yet we are seeing an excitement and dedication from men and women within this nation that are telling a different story.  When you are touched by Jesus, there is no turning back.  We are expecting great things from this nation and are thrilled to see the hunger that the Gabonese have for the Lord!  The harvest is truly ripe.
